Neurons rely on long-distance transport of organelles and vesicles along the microtubule cytoskeleton, driven by the molecular motors cytoplasmic dynein and kinesin.  We are using biophysical approaches including in vitro reconstitution with single molecule resolution, and cellular approaches including optogenetics and live cell imaging to understand the mechanisms underlying trafficking of organelles in axons and dendrites.
