The loss of axons is a common feature of the developing and the diseased nervous system. In my presentation I will discuss our efforts to better understand such axon degeneration by developing in vivo imaging methods for axons and their subcellular constituents in transgenic mice. Specifically I will present our efforts to visualize and quantify axonal transport, mitochondrial function and cytoskeletal stability. I will demonstrate the application of these techniques to a number of specific models of neural development and neurological disease.
